Nintendo President Satoru Iwata Dies At 55

An immensely popular figure both within the industry and with Nintendo fans, he will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata.

Satoru Iwata (December 6, 1959 – July 11, 2015) was a Japanese businessman and programmer who served as the 4th president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Nintendo. Satoru Iwata worked as a programmer at HAL Laboratory early in his career before joining Nintendo in 2000, succeeding Hiroshi Yamauchi as the company’s president in May 2002.

19e0qqevbqsusjpgSatoru Iwata was the first Nintendo president who was unrelated to the Yamauchi family through blood or marriage. Iwata directed the company to pursue development of the Nintendo DS and Wii consoles in 2006, helping the company to become financially successful among other game console manufacturers.

Nintendo has just issued a short statement announcing that president Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55.
